Hair Trends For Men 2018

When it comes to fashion, hair trends for men do not change as radically as they do for women. Women’s hair trends never last for more than a year, and can be extreme. Men’s hairstyle trends however, tend to evolve slowly, and are rarely that unconventional. Each and every one of them has its roots in the hairstyles that were popular in the previous few years. Some have evolved subtly while others are more of a departure.

For men’s hair trends in 2018 the biggest change is the rise in popularity of longer, less conventional styles that overshadow the preppy, short back and sides styles that have dominated in recent years. And for those shorter styles that are still popular, men’s hairstyle trends are less about the previous, overly worked looks that required no hair out of place. In 2018 it's about less labor, more cool.

So let’s break it down here.

2018 Mens’ Hair Style Trends – Long Hair

The Long Sweep

The long hair trend for men has been making a steady comeback in recent seasons, but it has not returned to the huge sprayed rocker ‘do’s of the 1980s (thank God). To maintain a masculine feel with shoulder-length hair, opt for something sleeker and more refined.

“A lot of men’s shows this year showed slicked-back looks that use a gloss styling gel,” says Anthony Mayes, a stylist from The Refinery spa and barbers in London’s Mayfair. “Ask your barber not to layer the long hair and instead maximise length and sleekness.”

To style, all you need to do is run some medium-shine cream or pomade through damp hair with your fingers and follow up with a comb to work the hair back from your hairline to its ends.

Don’t. Just. Don’t.

Men’s Hair Style Trends – Short Cuts

The Soft Parting

This short haircut for men cut is complicated, requiring an especially good barber or men’s haircutter. Thom Ebbitt of House of Ebbitt here in Annapolis is a former Scottish haircutting champion who understands how to achieve this easily maintained, high-end look.

It is a haircut that has shorter layers and more texture throughout. The sides can be kept longer with scissors only, or just a low fade. There is no specific parting line, but more of a gentle sweep to the side for a more relaxed look. This style is ideal for men after a quick and easy look without having to blow dry. Just 20-30 seconds with a towel will suffice. Then you can work in a shinier product, rather than the usual matte finish. The result is casual but groomed, so you can go from club to shower to office without a lot of time wasted.

The new “GI Crew”

Another 2018 hair trend for men is an update on the always popular crew cut. Four or five years ago men were doing short hair like George Cluny. Today the look is bolder and even shorter, achieved with hair clippers.

Tell your barber to think grade one back and sides, with a grade six on top, and make sure he scissor-cuts the top to that length so you can get a little more texture into it, rather than leaving it too rounded.

This edgy style is definitely military in vibe, which means it is perfect for Annapolis men’s hair styles.
