There are all kinds of reasons people lose their hair. Men AND women. Hair loss and thinning hair can be genetic, but it also can be the result of stress, hormonal changes, even medicines. Often, hair thins because it is fine-textured and too many harsh chemicals have been used on it, making it break easily. Hair loss can be a symptom of certain illnesses (thyroid disorder) or the result of certain medical treatments like chemotherapy. Although popular myth would have it that women face hair loss near menopause, in fact hair i thining and hair loss ssues will hit women most commonly between the ages of 25 and 35. And if there is baldness anywhere in your family history, you may be at risk.
The fact that losing your hair is also stressful does not help. Hair loss and thinning hair is difficult for anyone to experience, but it is particularly devastating to a woman’s self-esteem. All you need to do is watch a couple of hair commercials to see how important thick long luxuriant hair is to the average woman.
For men, male pattern baldness is a common cause of hair loss. (Unfortunately it actually happens to women too) How does it progress? Batches of hair simply fall out over time. If you are male and have already lost a lot of hair, have a well-shaped head, and are in excellent physical shape, shaving your head may be the best way to go. It accentuates your toned physique, and turns your hair loss into an asset of sorts. And of course there are always hair transplants. If you have areas of your head where you have healthy follicles and have been caring for that hair properly, you can get great results. Just understand that it takes time, and you have to care for the new hair properly.
For women the problem is different. For us hair loss is often sudden, triggered by illness, stress, hormones (pregnancy or menopause) or diet. When dealing with thinning hair women are typically suffering a reduction in hair volume - literally the diameter of each strand shrinks. So we may not actually lose any hairs at all. But each one becomes much finer, and weaker. Very thin hairs will not grow past a certain length, so we start to get this peach fuzz. So hair transplants won’t help us, because the follicles are compromised. And we can’t shave our heads.
Once you have discussed your hair loss with your doctor, to make sure it is not a symptom of something more serious, you need to be aggressive in dealing with the thinning hair, because once that hair is gone, it won’t come back. For both men and women who are experiencing hair loss and thinning hair, you have twin goals; preventing further loss by using the right hair products and hiding whatever thinning you have already experienced. But you have to be doubly careful that your tricks to hide hair thinning don’t make it worse. So talk to your stylist about the steps you want to take to hide hair loss and stimulate your hair recovery.
