THE PROBLEM - The environment
THE QUESTION: I recently moved from Georgia to Arizona and for the first time, my hair is extremely dry and damaged. I used to color it but it can’t handle the bleach anymore. I drink lots of water and I use sunblock and much more intense moisturizer on my face but I don’t know what to do with my hair – except maybe cut it off. Please advise!!!!
EBBIT: Treating your hair with pure Argan hair oil, after you wash and before you blow dry, will help a great deal and then apply more after you dry. Agan oil is light enough that you can apply it to your ends every day if you need. When you blow dry your hair, do not dry it completely. The night before you wash your hair oil it heavily with either coconut oil or olive oil. Wear a hat to protect your hair from the sun and always use hair products with SPF. Use an extremely gentle shampoo like
You might also get a humidifier for your home – your face and your hair will thank you!
THE PROBLEM – bad hair color for men
THE QUESTION - my husband is going gray, and he thinks his hair looks fine after he uses Just for men – I loath this product, his hair looks terrible – its too dark in front and then two-toned in the back -it looks fake and makes him look old and cheap – I’d rather he just stay gray if this is how it comes out.
EBBIT – you actually have three issues here. The first is the kind of color he is using, the second is the color base (warm tones vs cold tones) and the third is protecting his color so it doesn’t get disrupted by the detergent in most shampoos. For the best color results he should get it done professionally. That would solve the first two issues. For second best results I suggest he use a high quality semi-permanent hair color, like Beth Minardi Demi permanent hair color. That way he can have that blended in look of demi permanent Gray hair takes color differently and men’s color tends to be cool, so he should choose cooler tones for his hair color – a shade or
Finally, he must use a color protecting shampoo otherwise it will strip some of the color from his hair, leaving him with greenish or gold tones. I suggest
THE PROBLEM – bad hair products for men
THE QUESTION - : My boyfriend uses hair gel which I think is silly because his hair is very short, so what’s the difference? However he can spend hours styling all ¾ of an inch of it – but the worst thing is the stuff flakes and then he looks like he has dandruff which is not appealing at all. In fact I used to think he had dandruff and made him use head and shoulders, but now I understand why that stuff never worked – it was not the problem at all.He insists he needs it – I’ve given him other brands but they all flake. Can he use hairspray instead or pomade or would that look weird?
EBBIT: If you use ANY of the drugstore gels out there – super hold, ultra hold, super max, whatever, you will end up looking like you have very bad dandruff. Those gels dry and flake in little white flakes. So for hair gel, I recommend Rene Furtere sculpting gel for men
THE PROBLEM: bad hairstyling for men
THE QUESTION -There is this unshaven look on guys these days, and it can look ok, but I feel like it doesn’t work on my boyfriend. He’s going to a job interview on monday – he thinks he looks hip and current, I think he looks messy.
THE SOLUTION:
With the very groomed, shorter, often closely clipped hair cuts that are currently in vogue, comes the unshaven, scruffy look. Although it is a hip, casual look, it actually requires a lot of careful maintenance, which is probably what your boyfriend doesn’t realize – He thinks he can get away without shaving and presto – he looks hip. In reality you have to keep the beard very carefully trimmed and the hair very short and even in order to carry it off. And not all men can wear it.
Men who should not wear this look include any men who have patchy facial hair, men with receding chins (it will emphasize them) and men who have soft necks. In addition, if he wears his hair at all long do not do it – that is just too much hair. With today’s hairstyles for men the scruffy look only works because the styles are short and groomed.
Also, newsflash for the boyfriend, The unshaven look still means he has to shave. In fact he has to do it even more carefully . He has to shave your neck each and every day, as well as the areas on your cheekbones. It’s more of a sculpted area that he lets grow out, than the whole thing. Some guys go much lower on the cheek, leaving only a small trail up to the sideburns – if he has thinner hair in the lower cheek area, this could work better for you.
THE PROBLEM: - new grooming standards for men
THE QUESTION: My brother is still living in the 60’s – he doesn’t think he should have to spend any time at all grooming himself, he refuses to go to a decent hairstylist, and its sad, he’s a good-looking guy, but it’s like he thinks it’s unmanly. He went through a bad divorce a couple of years ago, he should be out now meeting women, but he isn’t. I know it takes more than good hair but it would be a good start . Is there a no-fuss look out there for men?
THE ANSWER: These days, when it comes to your hair, you guys are going to need a lot more than a trip to the barbershop to look good. Current hairstyles and cuts for men require knowledge of the latest in grooming products as well as some kind of skill in their application. As a result, a lot of guys look better than ever. At the same time, those men who refuse to deal with todays fashion for men – the ones that still go to Supercuts, or who think using Grecian Formula on their hair actually makes them look better, those guys are starting to look much worse by comparison
But you may have to help him out. Sometimes having a ton of choices is just confusing, so if he has no idea how he should be cutting his hair, maybe you coul make some suggestions. You can start by checking out some current issues of GQ, or go online to TMZ or some other celebrity sites to see how today’s actors, news anchors and sports figures have their hair cut and styled. You are looking to discover first, what are the current styles in haircuts for men, and secondly, out of those styles which works best for him
This is a concept you guys all seem understand when it comes to stuff like cars, so think of this as a conversation about cars. What kind of car should you get? Which car makes you look best, makes you look the most successful or is the best chick magnet? Which car is one you can maintain yourself, and which one is guaranteed to keep on breaking down, requiring multiple visits to your mechanic?
Haircuts are much cheaper than cars and they are surprisingly effective.
