We here in Annapolis love the summer. We have water, boats and all of the sun that goes with it! and we love all of the things we think the summer is doing for our hair – sun kissed strands, beachy curls – there is little that makes us feel more gorgeous and natural than #SexySummerHair.

But despite the hype, despite what we see in fashion magazines and on all of those TV shows that are shot in Hawaii or Miami - the summer sun , the beach, the days spent poolside or paddle-boarding, or on your watercraft is doing terrible damage to your gorgeous hair.

Here are five HUGE ways the summer is wreaking havoc on your lovely locks, and some easy ways you can combat the damage, and rescue your hair without spoiling all of your #summerfun in Annapolis and the joy of #summerhair.

1. Air Conditioning Damages Hair– who knew?

hair damage

We may love being able to escape the heat and humidity of a hot summer day, but central air is sucking the moisture right out of our strands. Whether you're chained to a desk at the office during the day, periodically taking refuge from the heat at a local Starbucks or blasting the air as you sleep at night, you need to make sure that you're conditioning your hair accordingly. Look to leave-in conditioners and masks for hydration on the regular.

(While you are at it, please make sure you are wearing a strong sunblock all over your body during the day and hydrating your skin with an antioxidant moisturizer as you sleep!)

2. Sunglasses Cause hair Breakage – who knew???

We may depend on them during the day to protect our vision and keep us from getting ugly wrinkles from squinting, but sunglasses can cause a surprising amount of damage to our hair. When we're pulling them back and forth from the top of our heads to over the eyes all day long, that annoying little metal detail next to the lenses is catching the hairs around the hairline and causing permanent damage to the follicles. To avoid this, be super mindful as you place them, or just tuck them into your handbag. (As

inconvenient as this may seem, losing your hair is even more inconvenient.)

3. Top Knots and High Ponytails Damage Hairline - NOOOOO!

Summer is throw-your-hair-up season. Top-knots and ponytails are our lifelines when humidity strikes. However, when worn for extended periods, these taut styles can be damaging to your hairline...even causing permanent baldness in spots in the worst-case scenarios. And then there are the many problems that come from using hair ties on the regular, especially those that seem to rip your hair out every time you try to take them out. The better they hold your hair, the worse they are for hair breakage...so choose your hair ties wisely, remove them carefully, and BELIEVE THE PAIN when your rip them out! And when in doubt? just let your hair go free. After all, what are beachy curls for?

4. The Sun Ruins Your Hair. The sun ruins your hair. The sun ruins your hair...

In this day and age you know that baking your head in the sun isn't great for your hair. But that doesn't mean you don't need a reminder. Or to or three. And, by the way, it is also really not good for your scalp, your face or any part of your body that has skin! And it's not just a matter of wearing a hat at the beach. You need complete coverage. Hair products with SPF, and a heat protectant, on your hair at all times is a must—especially if you color it. And don’t forget the SPF for your face and the rest of your body.

On top of all of this you wear a hat, or carry a parasol, or use a beach umbrella. If not, your hair will pay a dear price by way of dullness, discoloration, dryness, and even breakage. The rest of you will pay with wrinkles, a breakdown in collagen and even skin cancer.

Try hard not to spend too much time in the sun. But when you are out and about, on the beach or on a boat you need hair-to-toe SPF, end of story.

5. Wet Brushing/Styling is a No-No.

brushing wet hair is bad

Summer hair is often wet hair. Whether filled with salt water at the beach, swimming in chlorinated water, or you're just showering more often, chances are your hair is wet far more often during the summer. Salt water gives your hair more texture and thus more prone to damage. Your strands are dense with water, which means you shouldn't be throwing it up into top-knots (ahem, reminder above) or mindlessly brushing away at knots. Be patient with tangles—it's always best to tend to them with fingers first—and use a smoothing product, like a detangling elixir, so that's it's as gentle of a process as possible.
